Background

Conference "Innovation Networks in Regions - European Experiences and the German InnoRegio Programme" - Berlin, 13 September 2005

The aim of the BMBF "InnoRegio" programme was to increase the innovative and economic strength of East German regions. The conference examined the contribution of innovation networks to regional profile building and the support of cluster processes.

The central issue for the conference was how cooperating in innovation networks can help to overcome regional barriers to development. International experts discussed innovative approaches to regional skills and innovation development. How can public innovation programmes best support strategy-led cooperation in these types of regional alliances? One year before the InnoRegio programme ended, the results of the supporting research coordinated and led by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) were presented and compared with experience gained from cluster-oriented support programmes in other European countries.
